Memories have a strange way of weaving in and out of our minds, and there is both a mercy and a grief to the reality that we cannot hold in our consciousness all of the things we’d like to, or forget all the things we’d rather not. What’s more, many of the moments in our lives are too nuanced to fall neatly into one category or the other. This collection of paintings depicts a myriad of places I’ve encountered in the last few years, each of which now serves as a simple reminder of beauty, hope, and respite, but also acts as a tether to very particular joys and sorrows of a specific season. Painting each scene has been an intentional practice of reflecting on where I have been, where I find myself now, and the far reaching possibilities of where we can all still go. Because while our memories may splinter and scatter, the act of stopping to retrieve and reflect on the scattered fragments can be a valuable way of seeing ourselves and our world anew through a curious and empathetic lens.
